Takenouchi Yutaka   Narumi Riko

On Hatomi, a small island in Okinawa state part of Japan's southern sea frontier, the social environment is suffering. With the last student of the elementary school leaving the place, the closing of the school is a virtual given. Mr. Nakama (Ogata Ken), decides to do something about it - and heads for Tokyo to recruit his grandson. Rebuffed by his daughter, however, he decides to adopt another child. He finds Ruri (Narumi Riko), a mature girl of 11 who distrusts people due to the fact that her mother (Nishida Naomi) doesn't care much about her, but after seeing Mr. Nakama's true intentions, allows him to take her to the island. Unfortunately, the local teacher, Ms. Sanae (Konishi Manami), who was banking on the school's closing to be able to go somewhere else, is resentful of Ruri and makes light of her city fashion (including permed hair, fake curls, and miniskirts), which leads to a big showdown between her and Ruri - and the people who were enthusiastic about her suddenly begin to have their doubts, and only Mr. Nakama and his wife Megumi (Baisho Mitsuko) take Ruri's side strongly. Following into the island is Mr. Kawashima (Takenouchi Yutaka), a mysterious man who saves Ruri from drowning following the fight - and who becomes her conscience and friend in her daily life in the island. But is Kawashima what he seems? Or did he come to the island to run away from Tokyo - and possibly a crime he may have been involved in there? Katsumura and Nishiyama play a local married couple of neighbors, Kashu and Igawa a local unmarried couple of neighbors, all of them willing to help Ruri in their own way

1.  Heartwarming drama [Rating: 8/10]
Pretty hardwarming drama, and it's amazing how a tiny island in Japan with less than 60 inhabitants tries to survive in a modernised world.

Some pretty good lessons to learn from this drama as well, especially from an 11 year old gal (ie Ruri, the protaganist in this dorama). Normally, I would have fast forwarded the dorama to get it over with but for this drama, I patiently sat thru all episodes without forwarding it.

It also helps that the characters in this dorama are all pleasant looking, especially Takenouchi Yutaka ;)

2.  Nice, relaxing drama [Rating: 8/10]
I quite enjoyed the series. While the plot is slightly thin, good overall performances by all the actors (even the minor characters) result in a very pleasing, relaxing drama. Takenouchi's understated performance is also a nice touch.

3.  very good, heartwarming [Rating: 9/10]
This is one of the really touching dramas i have seen, although i have only seen 5 eps (fansubs are pretty slow) i still love it. It has a really relax feeling when you watch it.

4.  "Narumi Riko is great!!!" [Rating: 10/10]
at first ive been curious about this drama since this is the only drama (i think) which takes place in an island... and i have read the summary and makes me feel great... so i decided to download it... oh yes i was right it is great... Ruri is the main character which i fell in love with even though her character sometimes irritating.. but overall a good drama again that ive watched... Samuel Samaniego of Quezon City, Philippines

5.  A warm drama [Rating: 9/10]
A fuzzy drama. The island setting makes it a good watch. Characters are lovable and believable. Characters may seem annoying at first, but you get attached to them. The whole "life is worth living" and "living with the ones you love" theme is worked well. I gave it a 9 because the beginning was annoying.

6.  An unforgettable cast [Rating: 9/10]
I loved this drama from start to finish. At first, you're not sure what to make of it, but as you keep watching it, you grow more and more attached to the relationships and storylines developed on the show. The characters are the biggest part of this drama. You might think the characters are weird at the beginning but at the end of the drama, you really can't let them go. This is a great show with beautiful scenery and a heart warming, down to earth cast. Riko Narumi does her best performance here~

7.  Watch it! [Rating: 9/10]
Ruri no Shima is an excellent series. The casts are great and are perfectly suited to play their respective character, especially Manami. Sanae-sensei added a much needed depth to the whole series. Narumi Riko, as young as she was, did an awesome job as the main protagonist. What most people fail to understand is that, for me, the main character or the main story is not Ruri herself, but the island and all things that's in it.

I recommend everyone to watch it.

8.  Unloved Child Finds A Home and Family [Rating: 9/10]
A touching story about the people of an island who must try to get school age children to come live on their island in order to save it from going extinct. So, Ken Ogata, goes to Tokyo and finds a girl who needs a foster home. He brings her back to the island and the story begins. This drama is about the love of a family as well as life on the island. The acting is fantastic, the setting is gorgeous, the story well written. Highly recommended.
