The story is told from the first person's points of view. In a village of Shandong province during the earlier period of War of Resistance against Japan, a beautiful girl named Jiu'er was forcefully betrothed by her avaricious father to the owner of a sorghum winery Datou Li who was said to be leprous. One of his crew in the sorghum winery Zhan'ao Yu, being bold, stouthearted and brave, took away Jiu'er's virginity in the broomcorn field when she came back to her parent's home. They finally became a couple and made out a well-known kind of wine. Then the Japanese army came, slaughtering and snatching the village, and provoked deep hatred among the people in the sorghum winery. In the broomcorn field, they ambuscaded the Japanese army. Jiu'er and other crews die, and only Zhan 'ao Yu and his nine-year old son left. |
